Darell Lee Blizzard Memorial On Find-A-Grave
November 26, 1948 — September 11, 2024 |
Darell Lee Blizzard
November 26, 1948 — September 11, 2024
Locust Grove
Darell Lee Blizzard was born November 26, 1948, in Fairland, Oklahoma. He departed this life on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. He had a heart attack while relaxing at home with his beloved wife, Kathy.
Darell attended school in Miami, Oklahoma through the 11th grade and graduated from Grove High School with the class of 1967. He furthered his education at NEO A& M College in Miami, OK., graduating in 1969 with an associate degree. Darell started his career as a lineman with Public Service Company in 1969 working through their apprentice program and earning his Journeyman Lineman Certification. After five years he tried other endeavors. He was a Fireman, Insurance Agent, and owed D & K Electric, but his real calling was being a Lineman. He returned to that occupation working for REC and PSO before going to GRDA where he retired January 1, 2005 after 23 years of service. He loved Linework and often stated the satisfaction of what he did because not many could climb poles and work from such heights. Darell was so pleased when his grandson, Hayden, decided to follow him and become a Lineman.
During this time, he mentored many young men on job related issues and family life as well.
It was at NEO in December of "67 when he met his true love, Betty Kathryn (Kathy) Edens. They were married six months later and spent 56 years together. Wherever Darell went he always wanted her by his side. Together they have two children, Darell Wesley and Kathryn Denise. To Darell family meant everything. He was immensely proud of his wife and children and treasured every moment spent with them, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Darell loved his brothers and sister and enjoyed meeting them for lunch. He and Kathy also greatly enjoyed meeting family and friends at "The Dam Store" most Thursdays for fish day. Many times, spending hours visiting and/or trying to one-up Ken.
He was proud to be a "9-day Navy man". One of his favorite memories was a "Tiger Cruise" aboard the USS Kansas City from Pearl Harbor Navy Base in Hawaii to Alameda, California with his son. A Cowboy at heart, he loved horses and team roping which he did in his younger years and continued to enjoy rodeos throughout his life. Darell's other pastimes included bass fishing, (always had a good fish story to tell), hunting and archery. He won many placings in Archery including District and State first placings in Bare Bow. Darell also placed and/or won several Bass fishing tournaments. Due to his positive outlook and fun-loving disposition, no matter what he was doing, he enjoyed the comradery of those around him. Those who knew Darell knew he would buy or sell anything. He loved to "haggle". Darell coached Little League for a time where he mentored many young boys. Later he and Ted Littlefield teamed up and umpired for some years. They were a great team and were given plaques from the Frank Hair Little League Tournament in Pryor which he treasured.
Darell is survived by his loving wife, Kathy and their two children, Wesley Blizzard, and wife, Melinda, and Denise Powell, and husband, Joel, as well as two grandchildren, Anthony Powell and Seth; and Hayden Powell and wife, Caylie; two great grandsons, Brantley and Hudson Powell and a great granddaughter on the way; two brothers, Roy Blizzard and wife, Billie, and Robert Blizzard; a sister, Jane Williams and husband Charley; and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Andy Blizzard, Jr., and Retha Bell (Crow) Blizzard; one brother, William (Bill) Blizzard; one sister-in-law, Joyce Blizzard; niece, Linda Blizzard; and nephew, Terry Blizzard.

His family thanks all of his friends who remembered Dan and thanked him for his service to the country.
In early Spring, on March 5, 1948 Dannie Lee Powell was born. He had the company a few minutes later of a Fraternal Twin, Ronnie Lee Powell. Dannie was born to Samuel and Louise Powell in Oakcreek, Colorado. In 1950 Dannie’s parents moved the family to Tulsa, Oklahoma where Dannie gained another brother Tommy. Soon, the family would be transferred to Oklahoma City where he spent his gradeschool and junior high years.
It was well known throughout his life that Dannie and his brothers were very close. Always they were taught to take up for each other and be there when one of the brothers was in need. This was called on many times by each of the brothers and never once did they fail.
In about 1964, the family moved to Grove, Oklahoma where he attended and graduated from Grove High School. During those High School years, Dannie grew a passion for cars which continued throughout his life. Soon after graduation Dannie joined the Army and was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division. He soon found himself in Viet Nam. After serving one tour of duty and being twice wounded, Dannie signed up for a second tour. Soon after, he was seriously wounded by mortars which would prove to be the source of extreme pain the rest of his life. Not one to give up, Dan returned home and after many surgeries, he would return to Tulsa and begin a life following his passions.
In spite of his back, leg and spinal injuries Dannie would become a very good pilot. He, with his brothers in tow, would race on the weekends and he would spend hours building his cars to perfection. After racing for several years, Dannie and Joni built National Record setting show cars, but not just any car, Mopars only.
He loved to spend time with his family during the Holidays. One of his favorite things to do was to make his own gag gifts. His ideas were unique and always the hit of the gift giving. Dan’s heart was truly one of pure gold. He expressed to his brother Tommy, on many occassions how much he loved his family and especially his wife Joni.
Although in nearly constant pain, Dannie learned to live the best he could with his fate. In the few days before his passing, he expressed to his wife and brothers that he had lived a good life. He deeply loved his wife and was proud to have his brothers still close to him. Dannie never forgot their mutual love. He was a good man, a jovial spirit and a man who loved life, inspite of his years of pain.
The day before his passing, he wrote the following message to his brother Tom: “Hey little bro ! Feeling a bit better but still real tired. I really don’t feel up to much for Thanksgiving and I’m sorry for that. I know that this may be my last Thanksgiving but I still remember all the good times we had together. I thank God for you as a brother for you are always there and willing to help no matter what. I love you bro with all my heart and hope you know that .
Love your big bro
Dan”
Dannie was a true Patriot and loved to be acknowledged on Veterans Day. He was proud of his service and proud of his wife. Dan never forgot the lesson that his parents taught him, “To always be there for your Brothers.” The 3 boys were like one spirit and after responding to multiple family messages on this Veterans Day, Dannie passed away within the hour.
